The Akela factor: How BJP is, once again, riding on PM Modi’s shoulders

"The country is watching, how one person is outweighing so many," the proverb goes. "Desh dekh raha hai, ek akela kitnon pe bhari padh raha hai."

While Narendra Modi's statement in the Rajya Sabha seemed to be an outburst directed at the unrelenting sloganeering from the Opposition benches about the Adani Group claims, the Prime Minister may have unintentionally provided his party with a punch line.

Because the BJP is certain that, when it starts the countdown to the 2024 general elections, its trump card will continue to be framing the race as "Modi vs. the Others" in order to smooth over the inevitable hiccups caused by problems like inflation, unemployment, etc.

To elaborate, the party would concentrate on the policies of the Modi government or the Center. The Modi administration is dedicated to reaching the benefits of its programmes to the last man standing, and the BJP identified this as a winner some time ago. The party refers to this as "true secularism," not demarcated by any faith or community, or, as it puts it, "politics of saturation."

The BJP views the "labharthis," or recipients of these programmes, as devoted party supporters, and the risk paid off in recent elections like the one in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has now instructed every morcha to hold seminars, camps, and nukkad gatherings, distribute literature, and create short films to raise awareness of its programmes.

It's telling that during the most recent session of Parliament, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya warned state governments run by the opposition against "taking credit" for initiatives created by the federal administration. Mandaviya said the Center might be forced to end the initiatives if they were renamed, citing similar actions in Andhra Pradesh, the Aam Aadmi Party-ruled Punjab, and Delhi.

Following claims of improper management of Central programmes, the Centre recently sent teams to West Bengal without delay, disregarded the Trinamool Congress administration's complaints.
